iPhone backupsYou have recently purchased your first iPhone but, due to a technical problem, you have to bring it to service. Speaking with Apple technical support, which you have previously asked to know how to proceed to bring your device for repair, you have been told that, before delivering the phone, you need to back up all the data in it. So you’d like to backup your iPhone , and then make a backup of all the data and photos on the device, but you do not know how? If things are actually the way I described them, then you do not have to worry about it: backing up is a simple task that you can complete in a few clicks, even if you are not very familiar with your computer.

How do you say? You do not believe me? Well, let me tell you, you should really read this guide; I am sure that at the end of the reading you will be ready to change your mind. To back up an iPhone you do not need any kind of complicated software: all you need is iTunes, Apple’s multimedia software that comes pre-installed on all Mac computers and that is also available as a free program for PCs equipped of the Windows operating system.

Now that I’ve briefly explained to you what you need to use to backup your iPhone, are you ready to pay attention to me? In this tutorial I will explain how to do the procedure in detail. Keep your iOS device in hand and follow the steps I am going to indicate to you in the following lines. I wish you a good read.

How to backup iPhone with iTunes

As I explained in the introduction of this tutorial, the most common method for backing up an iPhone involves using iTunes. Thanks to this software, you can easily copy contacts, messages, applications, photos, videos, songs and any other data stored on the iOS smartphone to your computer.

Using the iTunes backup system, through the procedures that will go to indicate you in the lines that follow, you will also have the possibility to restore the backup not only on your “iPhone” but also on other terminals (a proxy very useful if, for example, buy a new iPhone and you want to transfer all your “old” data on it.

There is also an alternative way to store all iPhone files on the Internet: in this case, the use of iCloud, Apple’s cloud storage platform, is required to be more precise. However, it should be emphasized that iCloud offers free to all users only 5GB of space for online data storage. But we’ll talk about this later: but now let’s go in order and begin to see  how to proceed to back up your iPhone  in a traditional way, that is locally on your computer, thanks to iTunes.

As I said, iTunes is already pre-installed on Mac computers and you only have to start it by clicking on its icon. Instead, if you have a Windows computer and have not yet installed  iTunes , download the program from  the Apple website . Connect to the site that I have linked you and click on the Download button  .

Now you will have to install it: all you need to do is double-click on the iTunesSetup.exe installation file  you just downloaded to start the installation client. Then you have to click on the Next button first  . In case the installation client is in English (and then instead of the Next button you could see the Nextbutton ), then change the language from the Default iTunes languages drop-down menu to the one you prefer. Then press on the Install button ,  Yes  (twice consecutively) and  finally on Finish .

Once you have installed iTunes on your Windows computer (or started iTunes from your Mac), the next step is to make the connection between your iPhone and the program in question. To do this, you must connect the “iPhone” to the computer using the supplied Lightning / Dock cable. Then insert one end of the Lightning / Dock cable into your computer’s USB mail and wait for iTunes to recognize the device.

Please note that if this is the first time you connect your iPhone to your PC, you may see an alert on your PC. You will then have to answer affirmatively on the warning that appears on the phone to authorize the communication between the two devices.

Once the connection is done correctly, you are ready to continue and  back up your iPhone . Then click on the icon with the symbol of the phone that will appear in the upper left corner of the iTunes toolbar.

You will then find yourself on a summary screen of your iPhone and then you will now have to click on the menu item  File> Devices  and then click on the words  Transfer purchases from iPhone . In this way you can copy on your computer all the apps and multimedia content that you have downloaded so far on the device.

Once this operation is complete, make sure you have selected the Summary item   from the left sidebar. You will find yourself on the backup settings screen.

Then find the item Back up from this screen and make sure that the check mark next to this computer is active . This way all the contents of your device will be stored on your computer. Also check the wording Encode iPhone backup and set a password to encode the backup. This is an optional option, if you do not want to save your health and activity data, you can create a backup even without encryption, choosing not to check the mentioned item.

Now you just have to click on the button  Make backup now  iTunes to create a backup of all the data in the phone. I recommend, wait patiently for the procedure to be completed. The backup operation could go on for several tens of minutes and so be very careful not to remove the smartphone from the computer and do not close the program; you could cause problems and damage the backup operation.

Fortunately, it will be very easy to see that the backup is finished. Once it has been executed correctly, on the iTunes Summary screen you will see the current date and time at the words Last backup: on this computer .

Once the backup is complete, to restore your data on your iPhone or in a new terminal. As? It’s very simple! All you need to do is connect your phone to the PC, select the icon with the mobile phone symbol that appears at the top left in the iTunes toolbar and press the Restore backup button   located at the bottom right (always on the Summary tab  ) or choose one of the backups available in the Restore menu  from this backup  (in case of first activation of the device).

How to backup iPhone with iCloud

The backup through iTunes was the first method related to the possibility of a backup on iPhone. Now let’s move on to the second method: the one related to the use of iCloud, Apple’s cloud storage service.

In the following lines I will explain step by step how to backup your iPhone through the service offered by iCloud, the Apple online platform where, by default, contacts, notes, calendar events, photos and application documents.

First, before making the backup, check that iCloud has been activated. You can do this by going to   iPhone Settings , and tapping on your name from the screen that opens up.

Then tap on the word iCloud and verify that all the levers that you can see in the words App that use iCloud are moved  ON  (ie they are colored green). Check in particular that, in correspondence from the entry iCloud there is the word Yes . If not, tap the Backup iCloud item and move the lever from OFF to ON , turning it green.

At this point, to start a backup of all the elements mentioned above, tap again on the item  Backup ( from the Settings menu  > your name ) and, from the moment in which it will now be set to  ON  the lever related to the Backup iCloud option  , press on the word  Back up now .

The backup will be performed at this point but keep in mind that saving all your online data requires a lot of bandwidth and a lot of energy. For this reason I recommend you run it manually only when your device is connected to an energy source (preferably the power outlet but also the USB port of the computer is fine, provided you can keep the phone connected to the computer for some time) . To make the best backup, it is also absolutely recommended that the iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. The connection must be as stable as possible to prevent the backup procedure from interrupting.

Should the 5GB iCloud base plan be tight or you want to permanently store photos and videos on iCloud, I recommend that you subscribe to one of iCloud’s paid plans to increase storage space.

To do this, go to the Settings menu  > your name> Manage Space> Make the upgrate.  You will then be presented different payment options and you can then choose one of the available options: 0.99 euros / month for 50GB of storage on iCloud, 2.99 euros / month for a 200GB space or you can still pay 9, 99 euros / month to have 2TB of space available in the cloud.

Do you have to restore the backup you made on the iPhone from iCloud? No problem. To do this, first reset the device: go to the menu  Settings> General> Reset  and then tap on the words  Initialize content and settings . Once taped on this item you will be asked to follow the guided initialization procedure of the phone; you will then have to choose to restore the most recent backup using iCloud.
